A little over a year ago we first heard about Selective Dorsal Rizhotomy (SDR) surgery that had been carried out on a child from the UK who have Cerebral Palsy. We look at the article but agreed it was a lot of money and didn't know if Ben would be suitable, so we forgot about it. Then in January 2010 we saw Kim Wakefield on GMTV with her daughter Charlotte, again they had been out to St Louis to see Doctor Park. We decided to do a little further research. Again we felt that may it was a big decision and one we did not feel ready to make for Ben. Then in February 2010 we saw Debbie and Jack Lawrence on Calendar (our local news) and felt this was a sign. By the powers of ‘Facebook’ we managed to get hold of Jack's dad Chris, and made contact. Talking to parent who have been through the whole journey and hearing firsthand the difference to Jack life, we felt it only our duty as parents, to see if Ben would be suitable. We filled in the online patient form and sent it away........ We received a email from James Lee the International coordinator asking for more information about Ben. So we contacted Ben’s GP to ask his thoughts and to see if we could organise to get his x-rays and MRI scans. He was very helpful but suggested speaking to his Paediatrician. After a lot of phone calls and visits to our local hospital we had the discs on hand and had uploaded video to You Tube. So on Saturday 24th April 2010 we sent the Ben package to America................. After what felt like the longest couple of weeks – we received the email from James Lee – Dr Park said Ben was a suitable patient for the SDR. And so our journey begins.................................................... |
